Welcome to Sikhs in Hockey
Celebrating Sikh Excellence in World Hockey
This website celebrates the rich legacy and global impact of Sikhs in the sport of hockey.
Sikhs have made a remarkable contribution to hockey across the world. Their influence extends far beyond India, playing a significant role in shaping international hockey through dedication, skill, and passion. From Asia to Africa, Europe to North America, Sikh players, coaches, and officials have helped elevate the game on the world stage.
To date, 162 Sikhs (157 men and 5 women) have competed in the Olympic Games, representing nine countries: Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Singapore, Tanzania, and Uganda. Since 1928, Sikh athletes have featured in every Olympic hockey tournament, collectively winning nine Gold, one Silver, and five Bronze medals, and scoring over 300 Olympic goals.
Sikh players have participated in hockey across 95 countries and have represented 21 nations at the international level, including Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, Finland, Great Britain, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malaysia, Norway, Singapore, Tanzania, Uganda, USA, Wales, Zambia, and Zanzibar.
Their presence has also been a constant at the Men's Hockey World Cup since its inception in 1971.
This site also documents the contributions of Sikh officials at all levels of the game-from FIH and continental bodies to national associations-including umpires, coaches, and administrators who have played vital roles behind the scenes.
We extend our sincere thanks to Denys Shortt OBE, a former England international, for his generous support of this website. Having spent his childhood in India, Kenya, and Uganda, Denys has maintained a lifelong connection with the sport of hockey.
