Poonam made her international debut at the Champions Challenge 11 in 2009, well before her first U21 international in 2012 in a three match test series against Mexico in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
She comes from a very big hockey family. Her parents, aunts, uncles and siblings (brother, sister and cousins) are all affiliated with field hockey, either through coaching, managing or playing.
Together with her cousins and friends Poonam started the very first junior girls team with India Club in 2000 and from that group, many girls have gone to play for the Regional, Provincial and National level and have acquired scholarships to play in the NCAA (field hockey league in the United States).
This group started with an under 12 team (all indian girls) and now have two women's teams in the top two divisions in British Columbia, as well as many junior girls teams during the Junior season (predominately indian girls).
Poonam and her group are very proud of the fact that they helped establish a team for young indian girls to come out and enjoy the sport of hockey just like their fathers and brothers before them.
Poonam is the daughter of Canadian Olympian Hargurnek Singh Sandhu. Hargurnek represented Canada at Los Angeles 1984 and Seoul 1988 Olympic Games.
