Soma Singh was born in Sangathpur, Punjab, India and emigrated to the UK in 1966 aged one. He studied at Loxdale School Bilston, Highfields School Wolverhampton,  Wolverhampton Polytechnic  and City of London Polytechnic.

He started playing hockey at an early age and by the time he was 13, he was selected for England U16 squad. Three years later he was in the England U18 & U19 squads. He earned his U21 cap when he was selected to play against Ireland at Aberystwyth, Wales in 1983 and played at the Vancouver 1985 Junior World Cup.

A centre half/sweeper, he played for Bridgenorth Hockey Club; Wombourne Hockey Club; Leamington Khalsa Hockey Club (1985 - 86); Southgate Hockey Club and Hampstead & Westminster Hockey Club.

He earned his first England senior cap in 1985 when he was selected to play against Pakistan in Ipoh, Malaysia.

He earned his first Great Britain cap when he was selected to play against France in Paris in September 1990. Soma scored a goal in his debut for England Indoors against Czech Republic at Palais de Sauveur, Lille in December 1993.

He captained England team at the European Nations Cup in Dublin in 1995 where the team won Bronze medal. He won a Silver medal at the 1994 European Indoor Cup.

He played at Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games; two World Cups, Lahore 1990 & Sydney 1994; five Champions Trophies and 3 Sultan Azlan Shah Tournaments.

He won two Senior County Championship medals, three Senior Divisional medals and four Junior under 21 Divisional medals.

On the Clubs front he won National League and Hockey Association cup medals and played in four European Cups.

He is a Qualified Hockey coach and coached Bracknell Ladies; Hampstead & Westminster; Old Loughtonians; Maidenhead and Richmond Hockey Clubs. He was Assistant Coach to Ireland Senior Men in 2004 European Cup.

He was appointed Director of Hockey at Lord Wandsworth College.

In June 2012 Soma Singh was awarded Club Coach of the Season after leading Richmond men's 1st XI into the Men's England Hockey League Conference East, the team's third consecutive promotion.
