Jagbir Singh was born on 20th February 1965 in  Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.

He was educated in Agra and Lucknow and represented the State schools and the university.

He was groomed by his father, Darshan Singh, a National hockey umpire and Organising Secretary of Dhyan Chand tournaments in the city.

He was picked up by Indian Airlines and he led the Airlines in numerous tournaments in the country, including the national championship.

He represented India at the Lahore 1990 Hockey World Cup where India was placed in 10th position.

He represented India both in the 1986 Seoul and 1990 Beijing Asian Games where India won Bronze and Silver Medals respectively.

He was in the team that won Silver Medal at the 1989 Asia Cup in Delhi.

He was selected to represent Asia in the Intercontinental Tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in December 1990 where the team won a Gold Medal.

The NASJ honoured him with the Best Hockey Player Award in 1990.

He was awarded the Indian National Award ‘Arjuna Puraskar' in 1990.

Jagbir captained the Indian team at the Indira Gandhi Gold Cup Tournament in January 1991.

He was selected for the World XI in 1995 and 1997.
