Virinder Singh was born on 16 May 1947 in Dhanowali Village near Jalandhar.
He started playing hockey when he was studying at Victor Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar Cantt.
He joined Lyallpur Khalsa College Jalandhar in 1963 and played hockey for the college team, winning the Punjab University Championship in 1966 and 1967.
He represented Punjab University Team which won the 1967-1968 Inter-Varsity Championship.
He joined Northern Railways and played for Railways.
He represented India at Munich 1972 Olympic Games where India won bronze medal.
He represented India at Amsterdam 1973 World Cup where India won silver medal.
He represented India at 1974 Asian Games where India won silver medal.
He represented India at Kuala Lumpur 1975 World Cup where India won gold medal.
He represented India at Montreal 1976 Olympic Games.
He represented India at Buenos Aires 1978 World Cup.
He represented India at 1978 Asian Games where India won silver medal.
After retiring from international hockey, he took up coaching. He was coach for Punjab Sports Department and Surjit Hockey Academy in Jalandhar.
He died in Jalandhar on 28 June 2022 aged 75.
