Udham Singh Kullar, popularly known as "Udhi" was born on 4 August 1928 in Sansarpur, Punjab.
He studied at D.A.V. College, Jullundur, Punjab. He captained the College in 1947 and at the age of 19, he won the Punjab State colours, which he retained for 17 years without a break till 1965.
An injury to a finger just before the departure of the Indian team for the London Olympics in 1948 robbed him of a place in the team.
He joined Punjab Police in 1949.
He toured Afghanistan with the Indian Hockey Federation team in 1949.
He represented India at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games where India won the Gold medal.
He toured Poland with the Indian team in 1953.
He captained Punjab in 1954, and led the Indian Hockey Federation team to the Youth Festival in Warsaw in 1955.
He represented India at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games where India won the Gold medal.
He represented India at the Asian Games in Tokyo in 1958 where India won the Silver medal.
In 1959, he captained the Indian team which toured East Africa and was a member of the team that won the Festival matches in Munich in 1959.
He represented India at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games where India won the Silver medal.
He toured New Zealand in 1961.
He was a member of India's team at the International Hockey Tournament in Lyons, France in 1963.
He represented India at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games where India won the Gold medal.
He was awarded the Indian National Award ‘Arjuna Puraskar' in 1965.
After retiring from playing international hockey, he took up coaching.
He coached the Indian team that won Silver at the 1967 Pre Olympics in London and 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok.
He transferred to Border Security Force (BSF) in 1967 and retired in 1988. After retirement he devoted himself to training youngsters in Sansarpur.
Udham Singh died on 23rd March 2000 aged 71.
