Harvinder Singh Kular was born in Nairobi, Kenya. He was educated at Muthaiga Primary School, Nairobi, Kenya. He went to the UK for further studies and studied at Slough Grammar School and University of North London.
He played for Indian Gymkhana Club whilst in the UK.
On his return to Kenya he played for Nairobi Gymkhana Club.
He played at the Esanda Tournament in Perth, Australia in 1979, the Africans Nations Cup in Cairo, Egypt in 1983 and in Nairobi in 1985.
He played at Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games.
After retiring from playing international hockey he turned to umpiring. He earned his FIH badge in 1991.
